For a week, Sydney Dockers football clubs have had a job to do — building a derby stadium that they will be proud to call home.

But on Sunday afternoon the first official derby match of the season was played in one of the city's many private clubs, the North Shore FC.

One week ago on March 29, a crowd of 11,848 people packed into a packed, noisy, packed house in Sydney's West End to witness an event that will change the way they think about the world's greatest city.

It was the first derby fixture in over a decade between the North Shore and Adelaide United in one of the world's largest private clubs.

And the first derby game in the AFL's $7 million A-League derby in more than a decade.

"This will be a really big game for everybody," said North Shore FC boss John Thorne, who has managed the club for a decade.

"It's going to be special for our supporters. It's a long way from home. It's going to be really special for our players and the fans."

The final whistle sounded to end a tumultuous week that saw a $27 million Sydney FC stadium built on the site of a public housing development and the cancellation of a $4 billion infrastructure project.

But that was not the biggest news, or the best, for North Shore FC this season.

No, for a day at least their focus remained on how to get the league's marquee club — perhaps the most exciting story of 2017 — to its fifth final.

After failing to secure a stadium, North Shore FC spent the last two days of the month gathering as much information as it could on potential sites.

For six days the club was given a list of sites but had to wait until it arrived at the final four to officially declare their position in the league's premier competition.

"It was a bit like trying to go into the jungle on a long journey," said Thorne.

There were four different options presented to North Shore FC — they could go through with the plans to build a new, publicly owned stadium at a state-owned property site and take a risk or buy a land and build in the city's outer suburbs.

"We decided to take it up with the state," said Thorne.

North Shore's chief executive John Kavanagh said it was a big call.

"This will be one of the biggest clubs in the industry and we thought it was going to be a nice moment to get our hand up, so the ball could drop and we would all be happy and there was a bit o
